vivo launches its next generation foldable smartphone, the X Fold+
26. September 2022
Upgrades to its predecessor include 4nm chipset, faster charging, and even smarter ZEISS co-engineered camera system
vivo officially released its update to the X Fold series of foldable smartphones, the X Fold+. Following the design cues of its predecessor, this Chinese market exclusive continues use of aerospace aluminium, and now features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Mobile Platform, a custom security chip, as well as an improved battery and camera experience. On top of the existing blue and grey colourways, the X Fold+ brings the distinctive Oriental Red to the mix.
Improved "smarts" and faster charging
Building on the previous generation, the X Fold+ now brings the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Mobile Platform, combined with a vivo custom mobile security chip. The chipset adopts a 4-nanometer process, with improved performance and lower power consumption. When it comes to battery life, vivo has increased the battery capacity of the X Fold+ to 4730mAh, without increasing the size and weight of the device, which improves the overall battery life by over 20%, according to the vivo lab tests.
Aside from the bigger battery, the X Fold+ now also charges faster comparing to its predecessor, as it has the 80W wired and 50W wireless vivo FlashCharge, as seen in the current European flagship, the vivo X80 Pro. This allows wired charging from 1 to 70% battery capacity in as little as 18 minutes, and the full charge is just 35 minutes. The wireless vivo FlashCharge tech allows it to charge from nearly empty to full in 53 minutes.
In addition, the X Fold+ ships with an exclusive dual USB-C socket gallium nitride charger as standard, enabling charging of multiple devices, for comfortable use in various scenarios.
120Hz screen, inside and out
The X Fold+ improves on the folding screen experience with both of its displays – the outside as well as the inner one – now supporting 120Hz refresh rates. The inner 8-inch screen, with a 2160 x 1916 resolution, receives this upgrade, enabling a consistent visual experience when switching between the inner and the outer screen, as well as smoother image response when swiping between app screens, gaming, or displaying high frame-rate videos.
It's worth noting the vivo X Fold+ is equipped with 3D ultrasonic fingerprint readers on both inner and outer screen, with faster unlocking speed, higher security as well as greater useability regardless of the environmental conditions.
Finally, the large internal display offers improved split screen viewing for better efficiency. This means consumers can open up to two windows in the foreground, and support four task apps at the same time with dual windows on the split screen, and up to 12 windows in the background. On top, the vivo X Fold+ supports the so-called "Speaker Mode", where the bottom of the screen can display notes and the top can display a PowerPoint presentation, so the consumers can wirelessly mirror the contents of the presentation on a bigger screen.
Flagship imaging, co-engineered with ZEISS
When it comes to the imaging department, the vivo X Fold+ brings the improved camera sensors, as a result of the vivo ZEISS Global Imaging Partnership. This includes optimisations to the current optics, in particular when it comes to improved lens size, equipped with the signature ZEISS T* coating which reduces glare and improves visible light transition, resulting with improved image quality and accuracy of colour reproduction. The optics now include a full focal length quad camera setup, adding a periscope camera with 5x optical and 60x digital zoom, with optical image stabilisation.
The X Fold+ supports view finding on both internal and external display, so consumers can capture selfies using the main camera, which offers better resolution, light sensitivity, and field of view, making selfies even more attractive.
Balanced design and new Oriental Red colourway
The X Fold+ follows on the design cues of its predecessor. This incorporates square and circular shapes, making it a very distinctive device in this category.
In addition to the refreshed blue and grey colourways, the X Fold+ adds a distinctive shade of red. vivo has highlighted, during the presentation, that this device launches as a device available solely in the Chinese market.
